It was a long time coming but the HANSEN Japanese indigo collection has grown from strength to strength. After an initial launch comprising just a few denim styles and a henley and bandana, it has grown to a capsule that celebrates both Japanese craftsmanship and that country’s rich heritage of indigo dying.

The styles respect vintage denim workwear - the seams, the trims, the stitching - but adapted to something that fits in with the HANSEN aesthetic and the skills of the Japanese manufacturer.

Working with a highly regarded jeans factory in the traditional denim region of Okayama in Eastern Japan, there is loom-woven 13oz ‘neppy’ denim - one that has visible ‘neps’ or flecks on the surface, giving the fabric a rich texture and more rustic, used appeal. Alongside this is a complex dobby fabric dyed in real indigo used for a classic chore acket and also jeans. These will improve with every wear and every wash to become something unique to the owner. A further addition is a woven textile that resembles the intricate patterns created by traditional Japanese sashiko stitching making something striking and modern but with a nod to the past.
